Photography and art
In our Wellington archive we hold thousands of photographs and art works created by and for the New Zealand Government. These include oil paintings, water colours, drawings, prints and posters, as well as several thousand photographic images. These records are held in various formats and can be difficult to access.
These research guides provide information about the major collections of photographs and art works that we hold, why they were created, the agencies that created them, and how to access them.

Restrictions
Restrictions apply to many records because of their fragility and size. Negatives and small contact (test) prints are held in secure, temperature-controlled stack areas. Access to these items is through our preservation team. To organise access, please contact us.

Publication
Permission to publish is needed before any image of a record sourced from us is published. There is no charge for requesting permission to publish.
Please contact us to request permission to publish. You will need to provide the full archives reference and description of the archive that is to be reused and give the title and format of your publication, website or documentary.
