Almost 2 million images of significance to Aotearoa New Zealand have been digitised and will continue to be available online through our Collections search website for the public to access.

As mentioned in my previous update, Te Rua Mahara continues to facilitate access to archives as required under the Public Records Act 2005. Our holdings remain accessible to members of the public in our reading rooms located in Tāmaki Auckland, Whanganui-a-Tara Wellington, Ōtautahi Christchurch and Ōtepoti Dunedin.

Read more information about visiting our reading rooms.

I want to thank the public for all the constructive feedback received following the closure announcement. Your thoughts have been heard by Archives leadership and we acknowledge that the closure of the service is disappointing to many.

Digitisation remains a core part of Archives New Zealand’s long-term strategy, and we will continue to look for other avenues of funding to bring digitisation back online in the future.
