Anne McCahon

Anne McCahon was a New Zealand painter, printmaker and illustrator from Dunedin. Contributing to the ‘School Journal’ for over 20 years, her illustrations were beloved by teachers for their meaningful simplicity.

Dick Frizzell is one of New Zealand's most prominent and versatile artists. Known for its humour, his work often references the commercial world, pop culture and high-end art. He describes the ‘School Journal’ as “an unofficial history of New Zealand Art”.

E. Mervyn Taylor

E. Mervyn Taylor was a renowned New Zealand painter, illustrator and wood engraver. He championed printmaking and believed strongly in making art more accessible for everyone. Many of his engravings were used for illustrations in the ‘School Journal’.

Gavin Bishop

Gavin Bishop is an award-winning Aotearoa author and illustrator. He has published 70 books, which have been translated into 12 languages. In 2013, he received the Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit Award for services to Children's Literature.

Sarah Mathieson

Sarah Mathieson is an artist and Senior Archivist at Te Rua Mahara o Kāwanatanga Archives New Zealand. Based in Tāmaki Makarau Auckland, she contributed illustrations to ‘School Journal’ between 1990 and 1995.

Robin White

Dame Robin White is one of Aotearoa New Zealand’s most celebrated artists. She is a key figure in the Regionalist movement of the 1970’s and contributed several illustrations to the ‘School Journal’. In 2022 she received the New Zealand Arts Icon award.
