We collected this information for 2 reasons.
To enable public sector organisations to meet the requirements of the Information and records management standard (16/S1), 2016 principle 1.4 and Implementation guide (16/G8) – Organisations must have information and records management staff, or access to appropriate skills.
To provide a resource for those in the information and records management sector seeking to develop their capabilities. The professional development opportunities are presented from targeted short courses progressively through to in-depth courses for capability development.
Introductory Level – Seminars, workshops and short courses
For anyone new to information and records management, this section covers basic introductory concepts. However, both new and experienced practitioners can use these short courses to acquire targeted skills and knowledge.
Association of Local Government Information Management (ALGIM)
ALGIM offers online training courses for IM professionals across sectors, but with a primary focus on local government practitioners. Courses are delivered online, in real time with a trainer. Courses are reviewed and updated regularly.

Open Polytechnic of New Zealand
The Open Polytechnic offers online courses, 10-12 hours per week for 16 weeks. Entry criteria apply.
Most courses can be undertaken individually as a Certificate of Proficiency - see the full list in the Bachelor of Library and Information Studies which include:
Principles of Records Management — Provides a foundational introduction to managing records in New Zealand's private and not-for-profit organisations, public offices and local authorities.
Knowledge Organisation Systems — Gives a practical understanding of concepts and systems of knowledge organisation for use in archives, records management and IM.
Principles of Information Management — Introduces information-related strategy and governance for facilitating good IM within organisation systems.
Digital Asset Management — Provides an in-depth overview of digital assets and how these are to be appropriately and sustainably managed within the organisational environment.
Archives Management — Outlines key management principles and practices that cover the wide variety of archival collections in New Zealand.
Preservation and Digitisation — Introduces principles and practices for the digitisation and long-term preservation of records, taonga, information assets, and archives.

Leadership Through Data
Leadership Through Data offer courses on topics including Information Governance, Records Management, and Microsoft 365. All courses are written for IM practitioners. Courses are currently run virtually, and trainees have access to a live M365 training environment, where relevant. Although this is an Australian organisation, there are at least two New Zealand-based trainers.

Victoria University of Wellington
Victoria University offers post graduate Certificate of Proficiency courses, delivered online with evening lectures averaging 12 hours per week for 12 weeks. Entry criteria apply.
Courses include:
Managing Current Records — select the relevant year option. Theory, tools and strategies for ensuring records in the digital working environment are created and maintained in accordance with organisational and societal requirements.
Archival Systems — select the relevant year option. Theory, systems and strategies for determining those records worthy of long-term preservation; and their management in the digital age.
Digital Curation — select the relevant year option. Long-term preservation issues relating to digital objects, i.e. maintaining and adding value to a trusted body of digital information for current and future use.
Information Culture — selected years only. Explore the attitudes and behaviours of individuals towards information and the influences of these on the management of information and records.
Preservation Management in Libraries and Archives — then select the relevant year option. The principles and practice with an emphasis on management of preservation activities in a New Zealand bicultural context.

Formal Qualifications
The following qualifications are suitable for people with a range of pre-existing education and skills and are relevant for new entrants to experienced practitioners. They are arranged in advancing levels by provider, from introductory to increasing levels of information and records capability and career progression.
Open Polytechnic of New Zealand
New Zealand Diploma in Records and Information Management — 6 courses, Level 6
Bachelor of Library and Information Studies — 18 courses
Bachelor of Applied Science (Unspecified major) — 18 courses
Graduate Certificate in Library and Information Leadership — 3 courses, Level 7
Te Wānanga o Raukawa
Heke Puna Maumahara – Diploma in Information Management
This is an NZQA Level 5, 1-year introductory qualification. Delivered by three-day residential seminars, self-directed and online learning.
Learning is entrenched in mātauranga Māori and applying these concepts when organising and retrieving information. It is based on tikanga and kaupapa Māori and knowledge management through a Māori world view.
If you want a career focused on preserving taonga, whether for marae, iwi, whānau, Māori organisation, library or museum, and are seeking or currently in a role where you collect, access, store, design, implement, preserve and manage knowledge and systems.
Poutuarongo Puna Maumahara – Bachelor of Information Management
This is a NZQA Level 7 qualification. Delivered by residential seminars, self-directed learning and online delivery. Entry criteria is completion of Heke Puna Maumahara – Diploma in Information Management.
Progressing from the diploma, this qualification aims to develop bilingual and bicultural managers of Māori information resources in organisations. It covers designing, implementing and managing information systems that are suitable for whakapapa based rōpū, Māori groups and organisations in general.

Victoria University of Wellington
This qualification is available if you have an existing degree or professional experience accepted by the programme director and want to develop an information and records specialisation. It provides an overview of the information professions including legislation and policies and issues facing the profession such as copyright, cybersecurity, and privacy. The specialisations are:

Postgraduate Certificate in Information Governance
This 60-point qualification delivered online will provide you with an understanding and knowledge of information governance concepts. You will acquire a platform of professional skills that will equip you to enter roles related to privacy and information governance within organisations.
Entry criteria: an undergraduate degree in any discipline from a recognised university (or similar institution) and a GPA of 4.0.
Postgraduate Diploma in Information Governance
This 120-point taught qualification delivered online will equip you with a set of attributes and values that will enrich your understanding and knowledge of information governance concepts. It will enable you to build a strong platform of professional skills and enhance your effectiveness in managing privacy and information governance programmes within organisations.
Entry criteria: an undergraduate degree in any discipline from a recognised university (or similar institution) and a GPA of 4.0.
Master of Information Governance
This 180-point taught qualification delivered online will equip you with a sound understanding of information governance concepts, global citizenship as well as a strong platform of professional skills required for managing privacy and information governance programmes in businesses and organisations.
Entry criteria: an undergraduate degree in any discipline from a recognised university (or similar institution) and a GPA of 4.0 or higher in at least 90 points of the most advanced courses, or the equivalent.
Scholarships, Funding, Awards
ALGIM
The IRM Training and Development award is awarded to one person each year who is working within IM at a local authority. It provides the opportunity to attend a conference or course of choice as approved by ALGIM.

Australasian — Liquid Learning
Liquid Learning run over 300 events and training opportunities focused on developing leadership capability. These include strategy, transformation, and developing business skills like effective communication, information governance, understanding changing roles, and topical trends and issues.

Australasian — Records & Information Management Professionals Australasia (RIMPA)
RIMPA is the longest serving association for IM practitioners in the southern hemisphere. They actively promote best practice, set industry standards and foster professional development across all business sectors and educational institutions.
RIMPA provides nationally recognised certifications, online training workshops and a Continual Professional Development program, as well as online short courses and accredited external courses.
Institutions and providers formally recognised by RIMPA have had their course curricula tested against RIMPA expertise and knowledge of best practice, the ISO Standard for Records Management 15489, and if applicable the Recordkeeping Competency Standards.

The National Archives of Australia provide a range of training programmes and resources to develop information and records management capability. While some content is Australian specific, generic content is relevant to New Zealand, such as business information, metadata, email, description, and digital records - eLearning – short videos, presentation.
