Archibald Frank Nicoll

Archibald Frank Nicoll was born in Lincoln in 1886. He studied art at the Canterbury School of Art, under Sydney Thompson, and later also studied in Britain. He taught at Elam School of Fine Arts in Auckland, before returning to Britain, where he exhibited at the Royal Academy.

Nicoll was the Director of the Canterbury College School of Art from 1920 to 1928. He was one of New Zealand’s leading portrait painters of the 1920s and 1930s, and was commissioned to paint portraits of First World War Victoria Cross recipients.

Nicoll died in 1953.
