If you are interested in births, deaths and marriages:
Archives New Zealand holds Notices of Intention to Marry records for the whole of New Zealand from 1856-1956. These are indexed for the period 1856-1881. After this period, it is necessary for researchers to know the approximate date and place of the marriage. We hold only very incomplete records of births and deaths, and access to much of the birth information is restricted. The complete registers of Births, Deaths and Marriages are held by the following agency:
Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages

Records of historic births, deaths and marriages can be searched via the online database compiled by the Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages.
The Archives New Zealand Personal Identity Research Guide can help researchers with this type of enquiry.
