Indonesia
During Walter Nash's time, big changes occurred in Indonesia. The Dutch dominated Indonesia during the first half of the 20th century, but Japanese Occupation during World War II ended Dutch rule, and Indonesia became an independent country in 1945 (finally recognised by the Dutch in 1949). West New Guinea, however, was not incorporated into Indonesia until 1962. Since independence, Indonesia was dominated by two leaders, Sukarno (1945-1968) and Suharto (1968-1998).
