Maori
There is a range of material relating to Maori in the Nash Collection including correspondence, official documents, photos and objects.
Prime Ministers Michael Joseph Savage, Peter Fraser and Walter Nash were also Ministers of Native Affairs.
Prime Minister Peter Fraser enjoyed good relations with many Maori leaders. His sympathy with Maori concerns was long-standing. In 1945 he played a large part in the introduction and passing of the Maori Social and Economic Advancement Act, intended to help Maori to cope with the problems of poverty and increasing urbanisation. In 1947, on Fraser’s initiative, the Native Affairs department's name was changed to Maori Affairs. Some of Frasers papers are in the Nash Collection.
Some of these topics may also appear in other galleries so use the key word search to find more material.
