Nothing focused peoples attitudes more clearly than the atomic/nuclear issue.

Some were totally opposed to both nuclear weapons testing and atomic power stations, whilst others were strongly in favour of both and there were a range of views in between.

Throw in the revealed horrors of Nagasaki and Hiroshima, The Cold War and corresponding arms race between the superpowers and widespread debate about the accuracy of the science involved, particularly in relation to safety, and you have an issue that polarised families, communities and countries.
