There were several goldmining companies registered which have Tokatea in the name, the earliest one we can find is the Tokatea Gold Mining Company Limited, which was registered in 1870, the same year that their claim was pegged. This Auckland High Court file includes a copy of the court proceedings where a Mr Snell claimed that he had pegged the claim before the Company did, and that he was sworn at and threatened with violence by a Company employee.
