Machine sites - the Wardens Courts licensed stamper batteries, which were used to crush the gold-bearing ore. At one time there were 693 stamper heads operating in Thames alone. They were mostly water-powered, and the Thames water race was completed in 1876 to carry water from the Kaueranga into Thames. These batteries operated almost 24/7, with a break on Sunday mornings to allow for church attendance. Citizens reported that they found the silence unnerving. This water race to the battery site in Tairua was granted in 1900. The battery is unfortunately close to the school.
