Letter from Bursar of Christ's College relating to the proposed transfer of Cathedral Square to the Provincial Government, January 1858. The settlement's original plan had a cathedral and college in the Square but in 1858 Christ's College surrendered its land in the Square for £1,200 and ten acres in the Government Domain. Colombo Street was allowed to continue through the Square and site was reserved for the cathedral on the western side of the roadway. This was later changed to the eastern side and yet another change made in August 1864 when the roadway and cathedral reserve were altered to allow the cathedral to be seen from a distance down Colombo Street.
