What we offer:

• Appraisal and disposal-related guides, tools and products. These include the Appraisal Policy, the Fact Sheets on Disposal (F2, F5 and F11), the Guide to Preparing an Appraisal Report (G11 and G12), the General Disposal Authorities(GDAs), the FAQ’s on changing or extending a continuing disposal authority, and various templates and forms. These can be downloaded from the web pages above or ordered from: rkadvice@archives.govt.nz.

Government Recordkeeping Group Advice

The Government Recordkeeping Group offers free advice and guidance on all aspects of recordkeeping, including:

• Advice on any aspects of recordkeeping or records management
• Advice on legislative responsibilities
• Advice and assistance on application of Archives’ standards and guides
• Visits to public offices
• Advice on creating and applying an appraisal report or disposal schedule
• Review of appraisal reports before submission to the Chief Archivist
• Advice for local authorities
• Advice for public offices

Access to literature on appraisal and disposal

Archives New Zealand operates a Library containing material on archives and records management. The Library is available to subscribers by appointment.

Preservation advice

The Preservation Section includes professional conservators and conservation technicians who provide advice on general conservation care or on specialised care of specific archival media types. Staff also provide advice on disaster preparedness, planning and salvage. Consultancy services are available on a charged basis including:

• building and collection condition surveys;
• training in conservation management and disaster planning;
• salvage assistance;
• access to emergency facilities such as vacuum freeze drying equipment.
