Draft Selection Statement: Identifying and selecting public archives

July 10, 2018

Archives New Zealand is seeking feedback on our new draft Selection Statement (see attached below) by 28 September 2018.

Context for change

Archives New Zealand has a mandate to provide guidance to public offices on identifying information and records for permanent preservation as “public archives”. The current Appraisal Statement (16/Sm3) provides criteria to inform decisions about what to retain and what to destroy but does not clearly state what “public archives” we want now and in the future. Nor does it provide guidance on how to interpret these criteria.

The draft Selection Statement has been developed not only to replace the current Appraisal Statement but to also work with our current and future resources and guides to provide this direction and clarity. The draft also supports our Regulatory Statement (16/Sm1) and is part of a wider programme of work to transform our disposal approach and machinery.

Feedback

Archives New Zealand would welcome your feedback on the form provided below by close of business Friday 28 September 2018. Please email your feedback form as well as any questions to us via rkconsultation@dia.govt.nz.

Next steps

Any comments received will be collectively analysed and the draft revised as appropriate. The final Selection Statement will then be submitted to the Chief Archivist for approval.
